Blackbird Doughnuts v. Union Square Donuts
As you know by now I am a bit of a donut/doughnut connoisseur. If you didn’t know, please see here. Also I need this.
While my favorite donut is made in Portland, Oregon at Voo Doo Doughnut, my next two favorites are made only four hours away up in Boston!
Blackbird Doughnuts, a relative newcomer to the donut scene, is kicking butt and taking names. They opened up after we moved down to New Jersey, which E says is a great thing because they are in our old neck of the woods, in the South End. I would have been there EVERY SUNDAY. A few months back E and I stopped by on our way out of Boston for some breakfast donuts and iced coffee. They have a small shop right on Tremont, across the street from one of our favorite brunch places, Masa (GO FOR THEIR FIESTA BRUNCH).
We arrived at about 8:00AM, an hour after they opened, and there was already a line. While waiting in line we peered into the kitchen to see the bakers frost the donuts. Everything looked and smelled amazing, I couldn’t contain my excitement. I decided on the Black Raspberry White Chocolate while E elected for the Maple Peanut Butter. Both were flavors we had never had anywhere else! They came packaged in an inside out pizza box. So clever! Both donuts were delicious. Little clouds of decadence. Next time we are in Boston we will definitely be stopping by again. Several times in fact! Who doesn’t need a daily donut fix?!

Union Square Donuts, out of Somerville, MA, opened while we were still living in Boston. They sold them at the SOWA open market, held every Sunday from Spring through Fall, in our old parking lot. Our favorite Sunday activity. Man I miss SOWA Sundays.
They make a delicious fluffy yeast donut that is light and airy. They also have vegan and cake donut varieties. They have interesting flavors all year round and some killer seasonals. Our favorites include the Sea Salt Bourbon Caramel, Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch and Vanilla Bean. E loves their Maple Bacon donut.
Now you get your Union Square Donut fix in Boston proper all year round at the Boston Public Market. The Boston Public Market opened right after we left Boston, of course. It is Boston’s version of Chelsea Market. An indoor market with food options galore. It is next to Haymarket – my old weekend fruit and vegetable market. The Boston Public Market houses some of our local favorites, including Bon Me, Siena Farms, Taza Chocolate and of course Union Square Donuts! Definitely check it out if you are in Boston, and if you can make it out to the Union Square Donuts Somerville shop, I highly recommend it!

WHO IS THE WINNER OF THIS THROWDOWN? IT IS TOO CLOSE TO CALL, both donut shops are pretty spectacular. I make sure to visit both when I am in town!
