About a month and a half ago, my brother would not stop talking about a place called Hanoi House that had just opened in his old neighborhood, the East Village. He was DYING to go after hearing about it on Instagram. E and I decided to make the trek into New York City to join him on this culinary adventure. After wandering the city all day, we were ready for some pho!
Upon our arrival, the hostess (and owner, as we later found out) told us it would be about an hour and forty five minutes before they could seat us. We came in just for this, so we didn’t have a problem waiting. While we waited, we went to two different bars up the block (Augurs Well and a second one whose name I can’t remember) and had a variety of beers (and mocktails for me!).
It was about 8:00PM when our table was finally ready. We had already reviewed the menu in detail, so we were immediately ready to order. The boys ordered the razor clams as an appetizer, and beef pho as their main. I ordered the root vegetable curry, as there weren’t any other vegetarian options. Thankfully they sat us when they did, because otherwise E and my brother would have missed out on the opportunity to have pho. They got the last two bowls of the evening!
The razor clams came out first, and they were plated beautifully. The boys loved and inhaled them! They were really light and fresh, and were the perfect beginning to the meal. Next, the pho and curry arrived. The looks on the boys’ faces as they took their first smell of the broth was priceless. You could see the excitement in their eyes! My curry smelled amazing too. Every vegetable had a purpose and the curry was packed with flavor. Unfortunately, it was just a little too spicy for me. The white rice helped though!
After speaking with the hostess, who then introduced herself as one of the owners, we learned that, in the future, they plan on having other vegetarian options available. I am very excited by the possibility of veggie pho!
