My Tips for Flying with a Baby

Since Nathan was born, we have flown from New Jersey to Los Angeles three times! He has become a little frequent flyer at such a young age! Until he is 2 years old he can sit in our lap for FREE. We are definitely taking advantage while we can!

Before out first flight out for Thanksgiving, I asked my closest friends for their recommendations on what to bring to keep Nathan occupied and calm on the flight. They all said that the most important thing to be is PREPARED for ANYTHING. They came up with an IMPRESSIVE list and I wanted to share it here today. I have even added a few things that I threw in at the last second (noted with **) that ended up being lifesavers!

We are flying to Kauai in August with my entire family so we will be packing up our bags again with all of these items. It will be the LONGEST flight Nathan has ever been on. Wish us luck!

My Baby Travel MUST HAVES

Large Tote or Mini Duffle Bag that will fit under the seat in front of you – you do NOT want to be getting up and opening the overhead bin for every little thing.

Diapers – I pack AT LEAST 12 of them (10 regular diapers, 2 night diapers) for a 5 hour flight. You just NEVER know.

Wipes – bring a BIG package (or 2). They are good to use to wipe down surfaces and toys as well.

Baby Blanket – it is cold on planes.

Pacifiers – 2-3, to help baby with the air pressure changes.

Bottles, Formula and Snacks – self explanatory.

Toys and Books – a variety of small hard toys (that can be wiped down when they inevitably hit the floor) and board books.

Pajamas and Sleep Sack** – for overnight flights. Any way to keep to your normal bedtime routine is a good thing.

Travel Changing Pad – so you can change a diaper, anytime and anywhere.

Burp Cloths – spit up happens.

Drool Bibs – to keep baby clean and dry.

Two Changes of Clothes for Baby – accidents happen.

Change of Clothes for Mom and Dad** – accidents happen.

Sleep Sack to the Rescue

  • A wrap or sling for hands free sleeping, if you’re not in the bulk head with a bassinet (or if your babe is too big for it!) Its nice to be able to eat your meal 2 handed ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, a wet bag for when they inevitably blow their diaper to spite you. Super important to isolate those smells when traveling in an enclosed space! ???? happy travels!

  • These are all great tips! We have flown a few times with our son, once internationally and you are spot on with your suggestions of what you need.
