One of the things that we were most excited about when we purchased our home was our patio situation. We have two amazing patios, one upstairs and one downstairs. Upstairs, we have a Weber Gas Grill and now, thanks to the lovely team at Home Depot, we also own a Weber Charcoal Grill. E and I had never used a charcoal grill before, so we were excited by the opportunity to try it. We headed on over to our local Home Depot to pick up some Kingsford Charcoal and picked up two HUGE bags! Did you know that Kingsford Charcoal is made in the USA with 100% natural north American ingredients and real wood?! The real wood is what helps deliver on that authentic smokey flavor. And, it is always nice to support an American business during the holiday season! We decided to host a small Friendsgiving gathering at the house and use the charcoal grill to cook our turkey.
Instead of grilling a whole turkey (I NEED to try this one day with a spatchcocked turkey), I decided to grill turkey wings. Not your traditional Thanksgiving or Friendsgiving meal. You know me…always trying to put my own spin on things. I decided to do a coffee and garlic dry rub (from Trader Joe’s) on the turkey wings. Coffee always adds a really nice depth of flavor to meat. I allowed the dry rub to “sink in” for several hours before actually grilling the wings.
About thirty minutes before it was time to start grilling, I started prepping the charcoal grill. After cleaning the grates, I added the Kingsford Charcoal to the grill and lit it up using a little lighter fluid. It took about 15 minutes for the charcoal and the grill to get hot enough for the wings. The grooves in the charcoal definitely helped them light up faster. The built-in thermometer also DEFINITELY came in handy! I added the wings to the grill and immediately covered it again. It was time for the smoke and heat to do their job. They took a while to cook all the way through, but the smokey flavor that the Kingsford Charcoal imparted was totally worth it. If you are looking for something a little different this Thanksgiving, I highly recommend you charcoal grill your turkey! It was out of this world delicious!
