A little over a month ago, the owner of The Fox and Falcon, in South Orange, New Jersey, invited me and a few friends (and fellow bloggers) to have dinner at the restaurant and experience their outdoor dining set up. The Fox and Falcon actually opened up in South Orange just after E and I moved from South Orange to Springfield. We JUST missed them. Thankfully, South Orange is only a quick 15 minute drive away!
I perused the menu ahead of time, as one does, and was excited by SO MANY of the dishes. I couldn’t wait to try their seasonal salad, falafel burger, baked mac and cheese, and blackberry coconut frozรจ. When I arrived, the owner greeted us and brought us to our table. Their outdoor seating area is just outside the restaurant in the parking lot. It actually overlooks the South Orange train station! It was my first meal out at a restaurant since February, so I was honestly a little afraid. My fears were put to rest when I saw that their tables were set up waaaaaay more than 6 feet apart. PHEW!
When we arrived at the table, the owner mentioned that he ordered us EVERYTHING ON THE MENU. All I can say is WOW. Between the three of us, we had the opportunity to try everything! And we were amazed! I only eat kosher meat, so I only ate the dishes that were vegetarian and vegan. Normally, in a situation like this, there would only be one or two dishes that would be “Jess Friendly,” but there were actually an overwhelming number of things I could eat!
We started with drinks. A round of blackberry coconut frozรจ. I HIGHLY recommend this cocktail. It is refreshing and cool, and the slight hint of coconut is a nice surprise. We may or may not have ordered a second round of them. They were that good!
Our first course included the seasonal salad, the caesar salad, the jerk chicken wings, and the meatballs. The seasonal salad was so refreshing. I love the pairing of tomatoes with strawberries. The labneh added a nice creaminess to the dish, and the hazelnuts added the perfect crunch. Such a complex dish! I also really loved the caesar salad. The capers were a nice surprise. I WISH I could have eaten the meatballs and chicken wings. They both smelled and looked amazing. The sunday sauce on those meatballs smelled DIVINE.
Our next course included the nashville hot chicken sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, falafel burger, and their hamburger. I was only able to eat the falafel burger out of this round, but boy was it a WINNER. The sauce on it had a nice kick to it! I ate half of it and saved the other half for lunch the next day. BIG FAN.
Our last course included the farfalle with fresh summer corn, the linguine with shrimp, the baked mac and cheese, the cold soba noodles, the grilled hanger steak, the cast iron half chicken, and the fish taco platter. This course also came with one of their famous watermelon margaritas! Out of this plethora of dishes, I was able to eat the farfalle, the baked mac and cheese, the cold soba noodles, and the fish taco platter. I really enjoyed every single one of these dishes. If I had to pick a favorite out of this grouping, though, it would be the cold soba noodles. The soy yuzu broth was OUT OF THIS WORLD. And the six minute egg…just so luscious.
To say that I was STUFFED after this meal would be an incredible understatement. I cannot wait to go back. Next time, I am bringing E with me!
If you are looking to go out to dinner, but are a little scared like me, I HIGHLY recommend The Fox and Falcon’s outdoor seating!
