Mother’s Day Dinner at Salt Creek Grille in Princeton

On the Saturday night before Mother’s Day, E, Nathan, Nora, and I drove down to Princeton to try out a new (to us) restaurant called Salt Creek Grille. They offered to treat us to dinner for Mother’s Day! The menu looked great, so we jumped at the chance to try it!

Sunday dinners out are tough with the kiddos, so we decided to celebrate Mother’s Day together a day early! Princeton is about 50 minutes south of where we live. The drive down didn’t feel that long though because both kids slept the whole time.

Our reservation was at 5:00PM…yes, we now eat with the early birds. We arrived promptly at 5 and the restaurant was already hopping! We were seated in the main dining room. The restaurant is HUGE. They have a bar area with high top tables, the main dining room, and several other private rooms for private parties. As we were walking in, a bridal shower was just finishing up.

Within minutes of sitting down, the waiter came over with menus and water. I ordered a glass of sangria, because MOM JUICE, and E ordered a pint of a local New Jersey beer (they had a surprisingly good craft beer selection).

After reviewing the menu and hearing the specials, we ordered our full meal. We decided to start with the Tuna Stack and Skillet Cornbread. I ordered a special, the Miso Halibut, and E ordered the Filet. The Tuna Stack was a beautifully composed dish. The tuna and avocado melted in your mouth. The soy sauce that dressed the dish and the accompanying cucumbers had a little spicy kick to it. We ate the entire thing. Even Nathan had a few bites of the avocado and cucumbers. That was until the Skillet Cornbread came to the table. Once that hit the table, Nathan was uninterested in just about anything else. I totally could see why. The smell of the cornbread was INTOXICATING. It was buttery and delicious. We would have devoured it in its entirety if not for the fact that our main courses were coming!

The Miso Halibut was served atop a bed of rice, alongside steamed vegetables. It was cooked perfectly and was coated in a luscious miso glaze. It was so good! The dish reminded me of Nobu’s Miso Cod, which just happens to be one of my favorite dishes OF ALL TIME. Totally nailed it. E’s Filet was served atop mashed potatoes, alongside steamed vegetables. The filet was cooked to medium and very juicy. E particularly liked the sauce that coated the filet.

We finished the meal with some raspberry sorbet. Nathan LOVES berries and ice cream, so we decided to treat him to a little of both for eating basically everything we put in front of him, and for behaving so well.

Everything was delicious! Thank you Salt Creek Grille for treating us to a lovely meal!

With Father’s Day just a few weeks away, you should definitely consider making a reservation at Salt Creek Grille for your Father’s Day celebration!
