Broadway Date Night in New York City

When I heard that the Jagged Little Pill musical was coming to Broadway, from Boston, I bought tickets IMMEDIATELY. And when I say immediately, I mean the day they were released, back in March. I made sure to buy tickets for a show during the first week of previews. I wanted to be FIRST IN LINE to see it! Several close friends of ours saw it when it debuted in Boston, and LOVED IT. That was enough for me. Also, I am a HUGE Alanis Morissette fan. I was OBSESSED with Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill . It was one of the first CD’s I ever owned. I listened to it over, and over, and over, and over again. I know every single song on that album BY HEART.

I was born to see this musical. E….not so much. The only way I was able to convince E to go with me to the performance (he prefers shows to musicals and isn’t really that into Alanis) was with dinner at Nobu Downtown beforehand. E and I had first had dinner together at Nobu for our first date anniversary almost 9 years ago, and it has held a special place in our hearts ever since. That miso cod. HOLY COW. It melts in your mouth. But more on that later.

We arrived at Nobu at 6PM for our early bird, pre-Broadway, dinner. We were seated in the lounge area and it was already hopping! Thankfully, we basically knew the menu by heart and were able to order ALL of our favorites very quickly! We did have to run to a show, after all.

I ordered a Black Orchid cocktail and E ordered a glass of sake to start. It isn’t a proper meal until we have a drink in our hands. We then proceeded to order Miso Chips with Tuna, Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Rock Sea Bass (instead of shrimp) with Creamy Spicy Sauce, Miso Cod and, for dessert, a Bento Box with a molten chocolate lava cake and matcha gelato. It sounds like a lot of food, but it is actually the perfect amount for two to share. We order every single one of these dishes whenever we dine at Nobu. Which is why we don’t go to Nobu that often. It gets really pricey, really fast! For a nice evening out, though, it is WORTH EVERY PENNY. It is hard to even pick a favorite. They are all delicious. We finished our meal in record time and hopped on the subway to get to Times Square. I was SO EXCITED!

We arrived at the theater 10 minutes late. I know what you are thinking. You were those people?! Unfortunately, the NYC subway didn’t move fast enough! Thankfully, we didn’t miss much, and we were at the end of a row so we didn’t bother many people with our late arrival. From the very first song, until the end of the show, I was singing. EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. While most of the songs in the show came from Jagged Little Pill, there were a few that were sourced from other albums, and one or two that were written specifically for the show. My favorite song from the show was “You Oughta Know.” Everyone loved it so much that the singer received a standing ovation, right in the middle of the show. It was heart wrenching and powerful. The whole show was a wild ride! I laughed, I cried. Anyone who grew up in the 1990’s would enjoy Jagged Little Pill. Even E enjoyed it! I want to see it again.

If you are looking for a fun date night idea, I highly recommend dinner at Nobu, followed by Jagged Little Pill! You will love it and I can almost guarantee that your date will enjoy it as well. But…maybe take a yellow cab or an Uber from the restaurant to the show…so you aren’t late like us!
