Our Kid Friendly Living Room Redesign

On New Year’s Eve (it feels like an eternity ago, right?), we hosted a few friends and their families for appetizers and an early NYE Netflix countdown with the kiddos. We had 6 children running/crawling around. It was a bit of a mad house, but it was a lot of fun! It was on that night, though, that E and I agreed that we needed to make some changes in our living room. If you remember, I posted about our living room just after moving into our new home. When we first moved in, the living room is where E and I would hang out together. Just two crazy kids cozying up on the couch to watch some Netflix. Once we had Nathan, the room (and our life) changed forever. Now our living room is CONSTANTLY covered in toys, throw blankets, Cheerios, and Kix cereal.

Over the last several months, I have been working with Brady at Havenly on a living room redesign. Small changes, not big ones. I have written about my LOVE of Havenly on the blog before. Click HERE to see how they helped me redecorate our master bedroom. They make redecorating so easy and affordable! My goal with this redesign was to brighten up the space and add pieces that were more kid friendly. Scroll down to take a look at our proposed layout.

The first piece to go was our wooden coffee table. With its sharp corners, it was an accident waiting to happen. Every time Nathan jumped on the couch, I was afraid we would end up in the emergency room. Thankfully, that never happened. Removing the coffee table and replacing it with a soft leather ottoman has made such a HUGE difference and, most importantly, has given us peace of mind.

The second change I made was swapping out our lamp for a modern sconce. I was inspired by Molly, from Almost Makes Perfect, and her living room. I loved the way this sconce looked in her space, and it was reasonably affordable for lighting. So, I thought, why not try it? I love the way it looks in our room so far! I think it will pop even more once we replace our rug (more on that below).

The next change I made was freshening up our artwork. I removed Nathan’s daycare artwork and moved it to the kitchen, then I added a few new modern pieces from Minted (one, two). I love all of the natural tones and colors, and how they complement our furniture and hardwood floors.

The final two changes I will be making in our living room, at this time, are replacing our bookcase with something a little more modern, and replacing our rug with something a little brighter and more natural. Our new bookcase JUST arrived a few days ago, and I cannot wait to assemble and install it. Our new rug is on backorder, and will be here in about a month. I’m so excited for it to arrive! I think it will really transform the space.

In the next year or two, I hope to add these two Article arm chairs to the space. They look so comfortable, and I love the deep cognac color. They will match the ottoman perfectly!

When our living room is finally complete, I will share an update here on the blog!
